Album Club is a group I created in order to keep up with my friends, help musicians get paid for their work, and rediscover the joy of music discovery. We’ve made a logo, printed merch, and built a server to listen to music without the data extractors spying on us. It’s been fun.
Keeping up with friends
Maintaining friendships as you enter your 30s or 40s is tricky. People get married, move, and start families. Setting time for people to get together that is predictable becomes ever more important to fit into their schedules. We set aside the first Friday of the month to catch up, cook together, and listen to new music.
Helping artists get paid
Money is pooled together and albums are bought on Bandcamp or Apple Music. These are added to a server running Plexamp which I set up and run from my house for clubbers to access and listen to. It’s legally a shady shade of grey, but we are all paying far more money into the artists hands by paying for albums.
Rediscovering the joy of music discovery
Falling into the trap of listening to the same music as you age is one you actively have to work at to avoid. Having people who suggest new stuff is a fantastic way to find and uncover new things. I personally value my friends recommendations way above algorithms.
